Safari AI mode: what it is and how to turn it off
Safari AI mode can mean three different things: an Apple feature on a webpage, an AI result from Google Search, or an AI agent connected to Safari. The quickest clue is where the AI appears: inside a webpage menu, above Google’s links, or in a developer setup. Here is how to name it, change what you can on Mac and iPhone, and spot what has no separate off switch. Checked October 2026; paths below apply to macOS 27, iOS 27, and Safari 27.
Safari AI mode means three different products
| What you see | Product | Where it runs | Turn it off on Mac | Turn it off on iPhone | What no setting removes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safari’s Smart Search field menu offers Summarize, or Notify Me when a page changes. | Apple Intelligence features inside Safari. The iOS 27 and macOS 27 guides say Summarize appears only on supported sites. Apple's 2026 iOS 27 Safari guide, Apple's 2026 macOS 27 Safari guide | Apple models can run on device or use Private Cloud Compute for some requests. Apple does not say which route a Safari summary uses. Apple's 2026 privacy description | Safari has no per-page AI switch in Apple's current guide. macOS 27 documents Siri and feature controls, but no dedicated Safari summary toggle. Apple's 2026 macOS 27 controls | Same limit: the iOS 27 guide lists other summary controls, but no Safari-only switch. Apple's 2026 iOS 27 controls | Apple's docs do not say whether blocking Writing Assistance also removes Safari's page summary. |
| Google shows AI Overview above links or a separate AI Mode search experience. | Google's Search product, not a Safari feature. Google's 2026 Search Help | Google's service, reached from Safari when Google Search is the provider. | The Web filter removes AI Overviews for that search. Google says standard AI Overviews cannot be turned off. Google's 2026 Search Help | Same: use the Web filter for that search, or change Safari's search engine. | Google documents Web as a filter to select after each search. Google's 2026 Search Help |
| A coding agent inspects a Safari page, console, DOM, screenshot, or network request. | Safari MCP, Apple's developer tool. | Local Safari 27 on Mac, connected to an MCP-compatible coding agent. WebKit's 2026 Safari 27 announcement | Safari > Settings > Developer > turn off Allow remote automation and external agents. | WebKit documents Safari MCP for Safari 27 on Mac, not iPhone Safari. | Turning off Safari MCP does not remove Google's AI results or Apple Intelligence features. |
How to turn off Apple's Safari AI features
Apple's macOS 27 and iOS 27 guides document no Safari-only switch for these features; the controls that exist act on Siri and Apple Intelligence across the system. On Mac, click in Safari's Smart Search field, then choose Summarize; on iPhone, tap the Page Menu, then Summarize. Both guides say Summarize appears only on supported sites. Notify Me, which alerts you when a page changes, is listed for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Apple's 2026 macOS 27 Safari guide, Apple's 2026 iOS 27 Safari guide, Apple's 2026 feature list
Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 requires an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone Air, or iPhone 16 model or later. On Mac it requires a Mac with M1 or later, or MacBook Neo (A18 Pro). Apple lists supported languages including English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese; availability varies by language and region. Apple's 2026 device and language requirements
The old advice to switch off one master Apple Intelligence toggle is not a reliable macOS 27 or iOS 27 instruction. Apple's current guides list controls for Siri, Siri Classic, and per-app summaries, but not a Safari-only summary switch. To disable Siri AI, open System Settings > Siri > Turn Off Siri on Mac, or Settings > Siri > Turn Off Siri on iPhone. To keep a non-AI assistant, turn Siri back on and choose Use Siri Classic on Mac; on iPhone, tap Turn on Siri, then Siri Classic. Apple says Siri AI won't initially be available in the EU on iOS. This changes Siri; it does not turn off every Apple Intelligence feature. Apple's 2026 macOS 27 controls, Apple's 2026 iOS 27 controls
For broader restrictions, Mac's System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Siri lets you block Writing Assistance. On iPhone, Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Siri lets you block Siri, allow only Siri (Classic Version), or allow or block individual Siri AI capabilities such as Image Creation. Neither route names Safari's summary, and Apple does not say whether blocking Writing Assistance also removes Safari's Summarize action. Apple says Intelligence often runs on device, but some requests use Private Cloud Compute. Its public privacy guide does not identify which route Safari's summary takes, so don't assume it is always local or always cloud-based. Apple's 2026 Apple Intelligence privacy guide
How to remove Google's AI results from Safari search
You cannot turn off AI Overviews on Safari with a global switch; standard AI Overviews belong to Google Search, not Safari. After a search, choose Web in the filter row; Google says this view shows text links without AI Overviews. It applies to that search, not every later search. Google documents this for both desktop and iPhone. Google's 2026 AI Overviews help for Mac, Google's 2026 AI Overviews help for iPhone
If you joined Google's AI Mode experiment in Search Labs, you can turn that experiment off while signed in: open a new tab, select Search Labs > Manage, then turn off AI Mode. To re-enable it, turn the same control on. This removes or restores the experiment, not every AI feature built into standard Google Search. Google's 2026 Search Labs instructions
To stop Safari from sending address-bar searches to Google, change the default search engine in Safari. On macOS 27, choose Safari > Settings > Search > Search engine. On iOS 27, open Settings > Search > Search Engine. Apple's guides document these paths and the selectable engine control, but not a fixed provider list; MacRumors' 2023 walkthrough of the Mac menu names DuckDuckGo, Bing, Ecosia, and Yahoo as the alternatives to Google. Apple's 2026 Mac Search settings, Apple's 2026 iOS 27 search settings, MacRumors' 2023 walkthrough
Safari's built-in picker chooses from its listed providers; Apple's current documentation does not give a way to enter a custom search URL such as a Google Web-only endpoint.
Why did AI Mode disappear from Safari?
Google does not document a Safari-specific disappearance cause. Its help pages say AI Mode availability depends on supported countries and languages, and the Search Labs experiment requires you to be signed in to a personal Google Account and opted in. Check those conditions first. If they fit and the control is still missing, Google's public documentation does not identify a browser-specific fix. This is why an old Safari forum thread may mislead: the October 2025 Reddit result describes a Reader summary/highlights box, while the Apple Community result asks about a Google overview. Neither is a single Safari-wide AI mode. The 2025 Reddit report, the 2025 Apple Community question
Safari 27 can connect to coding agents
Safari 27 added Safari MCP for web developers. After enabling Safari > Settings > Advanced > Show features for web developers, turn on Safari > Settings > Developer > Allow remote automation and external agents. A compatible MCP client can then inspect the page, DOM, network requests, screenshots, and console. To revoke access, turn off Allow remote automation and external agents. This is an opt-in developer connection, not a general consumer AI feature. It runs locally and passes captured page data to the agent you selected; Safari MCP itself makes no network calls, according to WebKit. WebKit's 2026 Safari MCP privacy notes
I build Octoweb, a separate Mac browser that uses WKWebView, the same engine as Safari. Its AI is optional: if you never start octomind, nothing AI-related runs. It also has a built-in MCP server at localhost:3434; Safari MCP and Octoweb's MCP server are different tools. A WebKit browser for Mac · The browser MCP server reference
